Delta Dental of Oklahoma (DDOK) is a finalist in the philanthropic impact category for The Journal Record’s 2020 Beacon Awards.
Businesses recognized in this category have made significant charitable contribution to a group or individual in need within the community.
This recognition is for DDOK’s contribution to its MouthScience™ program, a 40-minute classroom-style course geared toward third, fourth, fifth and sixth grade students. A Clinic Educator facilitates exercises allowing students to use basic science and math skills aligned with Oklahoma Academic Standards to see the correlation of sugar and acid to tooth decay. The program is provided free of charge to Oklahoma schools.
Educating children about how dental disease occurs and what personal measures they can take to prevent it, empowers them to make better decisions and take charge of their oral health. This reduces cavities and costly dental treatment.
DDOK’s $40,000 contribution to the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Foundation, enabled Foundation staff to serve more than 3,500 students at 25 schools in Oklahoma’s metropolitan and rural communities during the 2018-19 academic year.
“State charities are vital to helping those who face great challenges in securing shelter, food, medical care and other basic essentials,” said Russell Ray, editor of The Journal Record. “Celebrating and recognizing these charities and the business leaders who support them is important. This event is our way of acknowledging their contributions.”
